  • Mon May 12, 6:49AM - BK
It did weaken considerably from those white caps. I was hesitant to bring my wing upm til after Jeff had been flying for over an hour. Flew for about a half hour and top landed when I saw a Tandem Setting up and Daive on launch. It really backed off then. The Tandem went to the beach. I launch and maintained and landed at the stairs after abvout seven minues. Daive had a short XC to the beach. We kinf of thought it was over for the day. I was feeling bad for Dave and Nicola's passenger. We went back to launch and the wind started to pick up and straighten out. Huh? The tandem launched with the passenger son and immediately got high. Then Daive, then me. Got another hour before the wind weakend. Great Day... again. Good to see Daive in the air. I think I've flown Plymout 5 of the last six weekends. That's a loot Gasoline. Worth it.

Oops! It was blowing cross from the North and there were white caps everywhere. I could still make headway at trim so it was not that strong. At first I could go as far North as the end of the big dune. Around 2pm many of the white caps had disappeared and Barry launched. Some kids came out of the condos on the golf course and waved me closer for some pictures so I did a few steep turns back and forth in front of their condos. I started struggling to stay up going by the golf course so I joined Barry on the best part of the dunes in front of launch. A bit after 2:30 I was struggling here too. On the last pass heading south I couldn't get back over the dune as I passed launch so I decided I had better unzip as I might have to land. My zipper jammed at 1/3 open. I struggled with it for a few moments and lost altitude all the while. I finally gave up and comitted to a belly landing. Just past the stairs I turned back into the wind and got the wings level flaired out as much as I could prone and rolled in on my wheels. I want to thank the PG pilots who offered to help lug my gear and Barry and English Dave who did help me carry my gear off the beach. It really makes a big difference having help with those pipes!

  • Sun May 11, 10:29PM - Jeff Curtis
Another fun day at Plymouth!!! I played lone HG pilot again. Barry helped me hump my gear into launch, gave me a hang check and helped wire me off a little after 1pm. Thanks so much Barry.

  • Sun May 11, 8:53PM - Bo Soifer
Luiz & I got in 2 flights apiece @ West Mt., 1from the East launch & 1 from the south launch--not epic, but enjoyable nontheless.

  • Sun May 11, 7:35PM - Dave M
Plymouth scored 8 out of 10 on the epicness scale today. Good to blow the cobwebs away flying with friends, and great to see Jeff having a laugh with his hang glider. Brilliant!

  • Sun May 11, 9:27AM - Jeff Curtis
I have paid my dues in January but have not received my card/sticker. Heading to Plymouth

  • Sun May 11, 9:00AM - John G

Looks like it'll be strong with a lot of north at the beach earlier, clocking around and weakening into the afternoon. Should be flyable. I'm planning to be there by Noon.

  • Sun May 11, 7:02AM - Bo Soifer

    Eville might work today

  • Mon May 05, 10:31PM - Peter W
There's an old addage that says "Perseverence always pays off." Today parawaiting for hours paid off for Van, Denilson (sp.) and me big time. From 2:30 to 6:00 we caught up on the winter's activities and paragliding stories while feeling the wind from behind us all afternoon. One last call to the Westfield airport gave a surprising report - 310 @ 8 mph! But where was it. In about another half hour the flag started snapping quite handsomely -from the west! Off Van went and was a thousand feet over within minutes. Denilson soon joined him and me next. For two hours we were treated to smooth thermals, delicious lift and a classic Mt.Tom evening. Two hours of sweet airtime, a nice dinner and feeling great about waiting it out! Good Day!

  • Mon May 05, 1:46PM - John C

And speaking of "mountain" look at the nice west flow and warm temperatures coming across southern New England Moday and Tuesday. Someone ought to be on a mountain (Brace, Mt.Tom) to reaccquaint him/herself with thermal flying in NE. Love to hear who's going where tomorrow.

I had a blast at the Beach Saturday! I want to thank John G. for graciously helping me carry my gear into launch. I want to thank the rest of the paraglider pilots who helped wire me off launch and that offered to help me break down when I landed. Finally I want to thank Peter for helping me lug my gear up off the beach. With all that help I didn't mind my wing being a PG umbrella. I had a bunch of fun flying with you guys. Watching you I learned that there can be lift way out in front. It was great experience for me flying in traffic, especially being up against a ridge. Being faster forced me to pay lots of attention as I caught up and had to pass or turn around. I was bummed I had to land in order to make a commitment at home. Looking forward to racking up more hours in the air.

  • Sun May 04, 3:21PM - BK
Once the rain stopped, Saturday was great at the BEACH! Team Brasil. Where were you?

  • Tue Apr 29, 3:26PM - Jeff
This kind of shooting other than being very lucky takes considerable planning and coordination not to mention having the right equipment, cooperative pilots and getting the right conditions for it to happen. Nothing beats this kind of flying and filming it. Having air to air audio that is au natural is very nice too. I will try to make more when I can.

  • Tue Apr 29, 2:18PM - John C
Jeff - The footage entitled "High Life " is great footage of soaring at Little Gap, I have shown it to folks interested in flying and they truly understood how awesome soaring is ! I am amazed how little good footage there is especially close in relative stuff, like a bunch of pilots thermalling together in close quarters !

  • Tue Apr 29, 1:07PM - Jeff
Thanks Barry! I just wish I shot em with a better camera! HG and PG is just too awesome to shoot in low def now that HD is so easy. Some of the New England sites are amazing spectacular on camera and very deserving of HD coverage. I think Rolan is looking at a new cam maybe???

  • Tue Apr 29, 12:02PM - BarryK
I was taught that... if you have nothing nice to say... say nothing at all. So here goes: I like those home-spun Low-Def Li'L gap videos you have on the gapflying site. They may be low rez, but they're not boriung... and the music is appealing.

What a great post, and tribute to those individuals who made such a successful effort to reopen Plymouth. I too am grateful, and hope to be hundreds over "White Cliffs" tomorrow!

  • Fri Apr 25, 11:14AM - Riker Davis
Sorry about the previous one word post. I congratulate your club for keeping White Cliffs in Plymouth a viable site. Good relations with local land owners and political types is worthy time spent. I had the pleasure of finding Bianca soaring last Monday in a gentle sea breeze coming in E / NE. I learned to fly at Skinner in 1975 and I first soared my standard rogallo Sky Sports Lark at Plymouth in January 1976. I moved to New Mexico in 1977 and visit my Dad at Bloody Pond (near Cedarville) on occasion. Previous to Monday I thought that the site had been shut down as we used to be able to drive right to launch. Bianca explained that you made presentations to the Bourne conservation group and have made great efforts to keep the locals content with your flying activities. Good job! I am still flying hang gliders 30 plus years later and am more aware than ever that site preservation is critically important to our sport. My son, Tucker, is a paraglider pilot and we both look forward to the opportunity to fly with you folks some day. In the meantime, if any of you come to New Mexico (more specificly the Alamogordo and Ruidoso area), I will be glad to help you fly here. Keep up the good work ! Soft landings, Riker

PK, Jim George, & I put up the wind sock in the Big Field @ West Rutland, I put up a portable "Bo" Sock in the Small Dome Field, & the 3 of us drove up. The road stil needs the proposed work, but with a 4X4 vehicle, it's O.K. PK launched 1st getting up very quickly. I launched & went straight up to 1,400' over launch & spent the next 25 min. very slowly working my way over the Big LZ, coming straight down. That Spring air can be very turbulent--I'm glad I had my Zoom.

I've ridden motorcycles since '78, flown since '84. Best line I ever heard was.. 10 dollar head wears a 10 dollar helmet. Granted there will be incidents that preclude the wearing of a helmet, ie, burst aorta, collapsed lungs, ruptured spleen, etc, but why?! would one not wear a helmet? At least you'll have an open casket.

  • Thu Apr 24, 11:21AM - Cathy
Michael, you forgot Tristan, who also launched with the first group. Weird day...big thermals and big sink. About 4 of us landed in the LZ by coming straight down, no glide at all. Pretty odd sensation! After everybody was on the ground, we got to watch Othmar and Tristan boat around over launch in a tandem PPG. Robert, sorry you had to walk both ways, but you made the right call. Next time!

  • Thu Apr 24, 7:53AM - Jeff
Helmets are always smart whether bicycling, motorcycling or paragliding. Some would never think to fly without one and there is nothing wrong with that. Some of us elect to fly without and that is a choice. Certiainly it is not the smartest thing to do and none of us advocate this. I agree it does not set a good example. Please do wear a helmet.

  • Wed Apr 23, 10:58PM - tatu jon
Hey I just wanted to say something about the videos from PA. In many of the states Motorcycle helmets are the choice of the cyclist, I guess that's cool? I personaly would rather be dead than a drooling vegatable. I'm happy to see that most folks in the latest video are wearing helmets. I was always taught to not even hook in unless you got yer brains in a bucket. Being lulled into a sense of security on a "training hill" can be a vegetable or even fatal move. I spent a couple weeks in a coma with a helmet, I'm sure I wouldn't be writing this had I not! Sorry, I know we've been here before! But, I cringe every time a motorcyclist goes by me with out a helmet. I find myself feeling the same thing when I watch the videos from PA. Too many years working in trauma surgery and firsthand expireance. Great Quality video though!! Flying season now realy getting off the ground.... fly safe and soundly all

Big day at Brace today: Jim, Lorenzo, Pato, Cathy, Othmar, myself and a few others launched between 3 and 4:30. Most flights over 30 minutes; Othmar was up for about 2 hours! James, TJ, Josh and R2P2 got stuck on launch for a while as conditions grew stronger after 5. I saw the first three guys make it out, but what happened to Robert?

When you form alliances with corporations who own bulldozers with tires that are bigger than a house, flight parks can happen. The very first official flight park to be created in the state of Pennsylvania is now a reality. We have been "approved"

May I suggest that pilots put their name on their vote on where to go fly for two reasons...1) It is nice to know who might be going to fly and 2) knowing who made the vote qualifies the probability of it being flyable.

  • Mon Apr 21, 12:02PM - Mike D
The lift was incredible, you could sit at the front of the wave 20 yards out over water and hover... At least I could being 30 lb light on my old Arcus. Next time I'll bring a fishing poll and drop a line in! Epic is the right word.

  • Mon Apr 21, 9:37AM - Peter W
One of the best coastal days ever for me! The conditions were consistent throughout the day allowing each of us to get high, play low, venture out over the ocean to whip around some fast circles, soar down the coastline until it ran out, float all the way back, land, take a short breather and do it again! When the varsity crew showed up (you know who they are) it was showtime. John, Stephan and Rob put on a mini manuvers clinic doing big wingovers and ridge soaring with big ears, and then amazingly top landing in twenty mph winds with big ears right on the money! Excellent diner together to end, as Barry said, an Epic day.

Epic Day at the Beach. Strong. Lift band extended well out over the water. You could fly straight out and keep going up. Tough to get down. Really. Sea Thermals. Got to 600 fet above takeoff. Nice!

  • Sun Apr 20, 10:50PM - John G
Next flying opportunities. Monday at Plymouth and Wednesday at Brace and Mt Tom. If the forecast holds, I am planning an evening flight at Tom. Come out and join me.

Great flying at Plymouth today. Barry K, Pete W, Mike D, Stephan, English Rob and I joined Phil and Nick on hang gliders for hours and hours of flying. Barry and Pete flew from 10am to 5pm, so I will let them fill in the details.

It was a beautiful day at Morningside Saturday. A bunch of us got some flying and practice in and a few had some lengthy flights. There was a nice cookout with everything from steak and chicken to watermelon. The meeting was very well attended and lasted 2 hours. Discussions on our sites, the budget and the Bylaws were the basic topics. The members voted in a few tweaks to the bylaws, but since the Bylaws committee working with the members suggestions did such a good job there wasn’t a lot to change. The meeting minutes and the New Bylaws will be posted on our website and emailed to the current members when everything is typed up all proper like. I want to thank the Members who participated in the meeting, those who did all the preliminary work in the background and all the members for their bylaws suggestions. I’d also like to thank everyone for all the great food they brought and Morningside for allowing us the use of the meeting hall. Will keep you all posted about a Rutland work party. Fly safe.

Pete.Waivers and Club forms are in the LZ.You only need to fill them out once every calendar Year.Rules are still the same.Sign in at the LZ before going up to Launch.First pilot to sign in ha to call the ranger and let him know we will be flying the mountain that day. When they fill in all the potholes the road around the back will be open again.

  • Fri Apr 18, 10:16PM - Biwingl Bill
Just when I thought I had won "The Six pack Challenge" At Eville friday with a 18 k flight,, Rolin yang launchs get stinkin high and puts one even further to take the But Congrads to Rolin.. I did 2 xc flights over the back, Both about 17 k. Good day.

Going snowboarding at Gore Sat. & to the VHGA meeting @ Morningside in the eve. Let's have a good showing there.

  • Fri Apr 18, 11:44AM - Cathy
Pato and Bill and I flew from Brace yesterday late afternoon. Very smooth, a few locals in the air with light thermals, but not enough to stay up for more than 15 minutes. Road still closed so it's a longer hike to the trail head (from the Mass side). Town crew is working on the CT side so they should open soon. Heads up, though, to early a.m. or late afternoon light condition fliers: Benoit has a pulley tow system for students which runs diagonally from southwest to northeast across the entire field to the left of the BBQ area (the southern field). Michael, congrats on your newfound mobility! Looking forward to seeing you more often!

  • Fri Apr 18, 9:52AM - Michael
Scratch that. Anyone think it's funny that E-ville has gone west-ish and Brace North-ish?

  • Thu Apr 17, 9:59PM - Michael
Anyone thinking Brace tomorrow afternoon? I'm seeing a lot of (light) west...

  • Thu Apr 17, 9:55PM - Peter W
Fun flying with Caju at Plymouth this afternoon with sunny skies and clean looking ocean. About Brace, I'm confused whether the Club is open, the mountain accessable, and if so, by what means. And the waivers, calling the ranger etc.

  • Thu Apr 17, 5:07PM - J-J
I'm in the same boat as PK, sent in my dues in December and haven't heard anything (though the check cleared). I tried emailing the officers to find out what's up, and got a response from Bianca saying that she'd send me a waiver, but I haven't gotten it, and no response from anyone else. Supposedly NEPHC is behind on paperwork, but this is getting ridiculous. What do we have to do in order to get noticed? Threaten to fly without stickers and park in the neighborhood?

  • Thu Apr 17, 3:10PM - BarryK
Talked to Pete. Plymouth definitely turned on. He and Caju did some cleanup duty while waiting for the wind. Thanks, guys.

  • Thu Apr 17, 12:13PM - BK
Just spoke with Caju who is on launch at Plymouth with Pete. He says the wind direction is favorable, but not yet strong enough to launch. They're optimistic the Sea-Breeze will kick in, and they'll fly. Apparently local youth are partying in the launch area and leaving a big mess. If you go there, it would be nice to bring a plastic garbage bag and take away some of the ugly refuse. A good Good-Will move. Gorgeous day! The weekend is shaping up East. We shall see. Enjoy the day.

  • Thu Apr 17, 11:45AM - John C
I am going to hit Eville in the morning to kite my PG in the LZ and do a couple of HG flights off the training hill , if the winds are right I'll stay at Eville ,if not bail to Brace for a late afternoon flight ! A ton of HG'ers are talking Eville on the "Snyhgpa" yahoo group should be a beautifully warm day with light breezes ! I put your cell in my phone the # listed below is my phone !

Launched late around 5:30 at Ellenville. (Finishing taxes in the morning took a bit longer than expected..) Still, got some sweet lift behind Greg's launch, 750' up. You could boat around about 500' over the ridge. James, interesting observation about the jets. I've never seen them in that position and that low. We'll have to check what's going on if that continues. John, thanks again for the ride. See you guys in two weeks. (off to South France ;))

Now that the E winds are a blowing, how do pilots get sticker/permit to fly Peaked Cliffs in Plymouth MA? It would be great to avoid an incident like last year where a pilot showed up without a sticker or the P3/H3 requirement to fly there. Please do not come to Plymouth to fly unless you have the appropriate P3/H3+ rating, a current USHGA menbership and the Peaked Cliffs permit to fly.

Clarke, I don't know you, but way to own it brother. Good flying at Ellenville Tuesday and great to meet so many pilots, John, John, Al, Neils, Lindsay. Thermals were edgy at on launch at 2:00. I heard Stan and Dave had just climbed out and left going south. Not having been out in awhile I launched about 3:30. I had just a beeping vario along so I don't know how fast or far I went up but I pegged the thing steadily in one rocket to the moon that was blocking the wind and not drifting much. I got high enough to be worried about all the jets going by. (Did a corridor get moved? I saw several jets on Tuesday, not far north of launch and not that far above terrain.) I came down and went back up to get another launch and landing in. By then it was starting to be more buoyant but nothing going so high. It kept blowing in and one paraglider who launched late (Neils?) soared for quite awhile in the evening light.

  • Wed Apr 16, 10:30AM - John C
I just read on "snyhgpa" that Stan and Dave neared 100 mile flights from Eville yesterday and reported strong conditions, also Terry B did 40 miles on PG yesterday from Little Gap,Pa launching at 4:00Pm because of strong conditions earlier !

  • Wed Apr 16, 10:23AM - John C
Ellenville now looks good on Friday, I will be taking the day off and heading to Ellenville or Brace depending on how West the forecast is, looking better for Eville right now !

West Rutland road is NOT open yet. PGers have the blessed opportunity to hike up the road to launch. There are no windsocks anywhere yet. I was over there yesterday and the New Dome Field is dry. The big Main LZ is accessible with waders. :-)Remember to park in the shitpile area, off to the sides, out of any possible way of the farmers. If anyone goes up to West Rutland, the sock and pole in the New DOme Field are in the treeline. Take a ladder and get it back up. The ties are all there ready to go. For site protocol see the VHGA Website. Remember, sign up and be a member (WAIVEWR, WAIVER, WAIVER) Before you fly. Have fun and let us know how it went. Peter Kelley

Hey clark and others using the F-bomb. Anyone who knows me, knows that I have no problem using the F-bomb. I work in the construction field where the F-bomb is in just about every sentence spoken. If your going to use it, use it where you know who your saying it to. Using it on a public forum shows a total lack of respect for everyone else on the forum. You have no way of knowing who reads this forum. Some are minors, religious and professional business people who don't use that language and feel it is offensive. Many readers of this forum are in the sport but many are not. I wonder what potential new site owners would think about the people in this sport reading posting full of swearing. Let's keep it clean for everybody

Its so reassuring to hear the voices of pilots who still love flying and who still find the joy of sharing it with others. Our club is a collective of individuals from all over the world who are smart, responsible and who are passionate about creating a region where foot launched aviation will prevail for each of us, as well as for future pilots. I just wanted to chime in on the side of reason, and to express my gratitude to those who countered the recent negative comments with more progressive and professional input. After all, isn't flying about freedom from the stress of existing, and experiencing fun and joy? End of sunday sermon. Anyone heading out into the spring thermals, or coastal ridges please give me a call or post on the Flyline. Thanks!

Site Rules are important,, We all must obey them!

  • Sun Apr 13, 6:47AM - Mike
Jarrett, I agree. Without some rules and the local clubs to enforce them there would be no sites in New England. Since we fly mostly private and state owned property. This is why rules and site intros are so important. One screw up and the site is gone forever. Also without USHPA we wouldn't have the site insurance that enalbes us to fly these sites.

  • Sat Apr 12, 10:03PM - jarrett

Hey Marko, you have a choice if you are not happy… just do what you’re doing, but no need to spit on the plate you once ate from! There are many others whom don’t have a choice or at least respect the rights of others. I do agree with you as far as rules sucks, but I can’t just say phuck them, what is good form me may not be good for others. Cheers

  • Sat Apr 12, 11:56AM - BK
Hey, boys. We all wish we could be more like you; legends in your own minds. We live here. Good luck with your superior flying and attitudes. Speaking of rules. You think you might minimize the F-Bombs on this forum. People who might want to become pilots might be discouraged to see this element of our community.

  • Sat Apr 12, 9:03AM - Biwingl Bill
Whats up buddy,, Sigma 7 'Proto" Sounds nice. Fuck the rules!

  • Sat Apr 12, 5:23AM - Marko
Piping and pooping birds, frontal flying on a 2ft shitty dunes, bad take offs and even worse landings owned by idiots, stupid rules and bad pilots, ratings, stickers and observers, what da fuck happened to the land of the free and the home of the brave? Fuck, I havent even payed USHGA (or whatever they call themself lately) for 2 years now. Exactly the reason why I just got in Europe, waiting to pick up my brand new shinny proto Sigma7 with race lines and trip speed of 48km/h. Against the rules? You bet your sweet ass. Its like being with the wrong woman - you know its something you should not do, but it feels gooood! Besides, after one year of surviving the Omega 7, this baby will feel like a parachute. I will let you know how it performs after exiting my first sat, very very soon. You boys behave now, ok? Till the next time! cheers

Conflicting Cape forecasts for Saturday. Accuweather says SW winds at Plymouth. But East at WellFleet. I guess there's a front splitting the Cape. And maybe not a total washout. Anyone care to venture a guess if Wellfleet will be worth the trip Saturday?

  • Fri Apr 11, 6:59AM - Mike H
Remember we’re having our VHGA Spring Meeting at Morningside on Saturday April 19th at 6 pm. No rain date. For most MA. Residents it’s a long weekend (Patriots Day). There will be a pot luck cookout so if everyone could bring something, (Food) that would be great. Remember among other business there will be a Bylaws vote. So this meeting will be for 2008 Active Members, i.e. Dues paid.

Who Knew? Plymouth worked great. I flew from 9:30 til just before NOON and it was ONNN, as I left. I talked to a WellFleet pilot at NOON, and they said people were flying to Nauset Light & back no problem. If IWindsnurf is to be believed, WellFleet weakened considerably after two pm. It looks like Plymouth was flyable ALL DAY. I got two hours this morning. Happy (tired) pilot working the second shift.

  • Mon Apr 07, 1:51PM - Carol
To all you who fly - I expect photos to be poster of all flying events. I am laid up for about 3 months after getting home from the hospital for a lower back fusion. I need your pictures so I can dream of what it is to fly again! Surgery was 100% success – my legs are pain free. I just have to behave, let the bone grow, and not rush things. Things were so bad that in March, I left my wing at home when I went to San Diego! The wind was also very north or blown out most days. Thanks!

  • Mon Apr 07, 12:42PM - BK

Yes, Please do donate to VHGA to purchase the LZ. It will then be a PERMANENT flying site.In the meantime, who do I talk to about Wellfleet? Plymouth?Truro. I'm going to be in Hingham for the next few weeks and wouldn't mind making a three-day week into four or more. Replies here or at the e-mail....

  • Wed Apr 02, 1:35PM - Paco
So I lost a bet at work and have to donate $200 to a "worthy charity"... rather then look for the same old starving children and beaten homeless women route I thought I'd ask if anyone wanted to suggest something geared around damaged aviators or something? I'll graciously accept any suggestions for the next 24 hours and then its over.

John, as long as we about to start in a community-wide global genuflect on your prowess of reading and accurately predicting conditions for those who are in need of help I’d like to jump right in and be first to bow the lowest. It was one of the great pleasures of last year’s flying season to have the confort of your “conditions read” as we set out in the morning. I noticed the where-to-flyline is last updated May of 2007… no chance we could talk you into reviving this? At least for the weekends? … Extra cojones-award for -any flyable day. Hail to the chief!

  • Wed Mar 26, 9:34AM - Jonathan Kaye

  • Sun Mar 23, 9:10PM - John G
4 pilots climbed Mt Tom this afternoon. After a non-optional launch in strong conditions, I flew for 70 minutes and the three other pilots hiked down. I topped out around 2,900 ft in a best 1,200 fpm thermals. No speed bar needed except for getting away from launch. Spring flying has begun. Plymouth might work on Monday afternoon and Wellfleet and Plymought might work for HGs (to strong for PGs) on tuesday.

That reminds me of a time when I was visiting a similar soaring site in horrible 92 degree weather with only 5mph winds when a couple dudes from the East joined us all dressed up in their Darth Vador outfits. We tried to get them to at least take off their helmets for fear they might collapse from heat exhaustion. Fortunately that didn't happen but they sure caught a case of smelly helmet though.

  • Wed Mar 19, 12:29AM - BKbeachEnvy

What I said before. I don't get it. NO CLUE which :02 seconds you're talking about. It was a blurry POS that does no one any favors... especially the free flight community. Just living a life of PPG ignorance. And I'm okay with it.

  • Tue Mar 18, 5:38PM - Nikolet
    Nice site!

  • Tue Mar 18, 3:06PM - Jeff
Yes the camera guy should be shot for the overall shoot but that one 2 second segment is a pearl. The rest of the production is terrible but Bob Armond makes that buggy come alive in real surfs up fashion. The maneuver itself was very well done.

  • Tue Mar 18, 1:31PM - Therapist
From what I understand Jeff used to free fly very lightly loaded on a wing and typically out flew other PG'ers in the PA area until he had a major sequence of deflations and lost a good deal of altitude. He safely landed but since this experience he pretty much ceased free flying and now flies a paramotor at low altitudes in non thermic conditions!

  • Tue Mar 18, 1:15PM - BarryK
Jeff, Are you trying to provoke safe pilots??? You post a video of a PPG guy flying his rig, OUT OF HIS HARNESS, NOT STRAPPED IN... STANDING UP... NO HELMET. It seems like your promoting pretty unsafe (read that "Life Threatening") behaviors. I know you gotta be smarter than this. What's your point? And the photography's awful, BTW.

  • Tue Mar 18, 8:55AM - Jeff
Quad Surfing? This looks pretty sick and I give Bob and "A" for innovation. Also a very cool camera shot...........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsVmK1Ao2MM

  • Mon Mar 17, 7:00PM - BK
have fun, Othmar. Rob Sporrer and Eagle Paragliding are the peeps. He posts every day where the pilots are meeting. It would be a good idea to stop at the training hill and pay tribute. It's a nice training hill. Have fun, and watch out for those High Tension Wires!!!

  • Sun Mar 16, 6:04PM - Phil Anderson
WELLFLEET SUNDAY-Jeff Curtis and I flew HG's Sunday. It was crossing a little north w/ 20 to 22 mph winds when Jeff launched at 10:30 . I launched 20 minutes later and we flew till 12:30. I landed 1st when I got cold.Couldnt close my zipper all the way and wind was getting in. Jeff landed after me with the same problem. It was crossing 20 to 30 degrees north when we landed. It was fun zooming down wind with no bar pressure just finger tips maintaining the crab angle. I could fly at trim upwind and just park it at the right crab angle and fly no hands Great Day.Where was the Brazilian Air Force?

  • Sun Mar 16, 3:20PM - othmar
By the way. I am going next Sunday!

  • Sun Mar 16, 3:18PM - othmar

Bella - Cannon Mt Tram opens 5/23/08. We also fly Burke Mt located about 45 minutes north of Cannon in East Burke, VT There is a mountain in Conway called Whitehorse where a few very experienced local pilots fly off. Your best choice is to post on this flyline a few days before you arrive and someone will respond if and where we are flying.

  • Thu Mar 13, 10:50AM - BarryK
Bella. Our club supports a sanctioned launch at Cannon Mountain. It works in light North conditions. Not sure if it will be open by the time you're here. Are you in New ENgland? Care to join the NEPHC? Cathy. SOunds like you guys had a great time in South America. Congratulations.

For those of you who have flown Northeast Mountain in Wells ,VT, This privately owned property (the entire mountain) has been for sale for a few years now and this past weekend I have learned that this Mountain has been sold to some Russian Immigrants. I hope they will be kind enough to let us continue to fly there ! The prior owner was a long time local resident who owns a factory and other properties in neighboring town, He is a real gentleman and allowed pilots to fly there and provided keys to a locked gate ! One of us who fly this site regularly will have to reach out to the new owners for permission to continue flying there !

  • Mon Mar 03, 11:19PM - John G

never knew "starfish " could fly...

  • Fri Feb 29, 6:47PM - Chris Grantham
Thanks Cathy! I'll send you that $20 later..;P Speaking of Ojai, I still have a few slots open for the April 30th-May 4th Ojai trip. We'll be hitting Chief's by default, and exploring other sites if the conditions dictate.

  • Fri Feb 29, 11:50AM - Paul N
Cathy, I flew Chief's in Ojai a couple years back. Peter told me hasn't been there yet, so maybe you guys can head out there, Barry. You absolutely need to plan that in advance and hook up with the locals because there are rules, locked gates and waivers for Cheifs. Peter will robably know somebody to get you on the "in". Nice big air there! Don't think the oranges bloom until later...but think=gs are green and prettier than normal in the mountains. Have fun, Cathy, have fun Barry!

  • Fri Feb 29, 10:31AM - cathy
I hope you guys out in Santa Barbara get to Chief's Peak in Ojai for some fun thermals. If you're lucky the orange groves that surround the LZ will be in blossom. Sweet smelling landing! Had a great trip out there last year with our most excellent instructor, friend, and local phenom, Chris Grantham. Pato and I leave from Santiago for Iquique on Sunday where we will be joined by Bill, Guen and R2P2. Should be "epic"!! Best to all up in the land of snow and see you at Brace this spring.

  • Fri Feb 29, 12:04AM - BK
Sorry I'll miss you, Paul. Thanks for leaving the cohesive thermals for me to turn in. Looks like the weather's gonna be favorable. It would be an understatement to say I'm excited. CU at Brace this Spring.

  • Thu Feb 28, 9:56PM - Paul N
Flew Alternator in Santa Barbara today with my brother Kurt and our very own Peter W. Looks like Barry is coming out here and I will be leaving the same day he arrives, bummer. Kinda mellow conditions today with no real cohesive thermals but a good intro to the site, along with the nice folk out here. Ex-east-coaster Marge says Hi to all back east.

Congratulations, Rolan! Wow First me, then Dave, now you! Hell we need to a start a club Day Care center! Wanted: Love and caring Nanny with extensive hiking experience, must enjoy long drives and mountain top views. Experience with four-wheel drive vehicle a plus.

I don't know if Mr. Danger is the guys real name or not but to make such a statement is quite irresponsible actually. I can assure you I am not the only guy filming folks flying without helmets or butt protectors. If it weren't for the crazy idiots running down steep cliffs in their buttless skydiving slings in the first place we wouldn't even have paragliding today would we now? I'm really not the type that lives and thinks in a box but that's just me. The video piece wasn't about motoring yet this individual directed into yet another PPG bashing session so go figure?

  • Thu Feb 28, 7:33PM - BarryK
Jeff. Did you look at the issues he raised? Not valid? I didn't click on the link, because... I find your videos well-shot but not interesting to me. I'm pretty sure Jacques can execute BigEars.

I gotta say it's really repulsive to read such an ignorant statement. (BANJO PLAYING) What a discredit to the flying community in general with such a backward attitude. Not to mention your too much of a whimp to identify yourself. I don't know about your club but many of our members average over 100 hours a year paragliding with no injuries. Maybe we should look at some accident stats? Ignorance is bliss. Comments by a nerd who probably can't even do big ears is what really should be removed from this board.

  • Thu Feb 28, 12:34PM - Jacque Danger
http://www.vimeo.com/735528 = another great documentation of PPG pilots flying without helmets, harness without back protection and poor canopy control skills in dangerous gusty ("10-25") conditions. We really don't need this crap posted on our flyline. I thought he was going away?

I have some very nice wings available that I seldom fly anymore depending on what are looking for. I have a one year old Powerplay Sting size small in perfect condition, an unused brand new XTC size small and one Axis Power Pluto extra small with very low hours. Give me a shout if you might be in the market for a very good wing at a very good price. These are all equiped with speedbar hookups and trimmers. Jeff 610-527-0882

Recently back from a PG trip to Costa Rica, staying at Grnpa Ninja's. Flew with Nick, Fred, Rudi, Dave K.,Stan, etc. The "dry" season gave way to torential rain a couple of days, but still got in 4 hrs. of airtime & enjoyed the trip. Back to snowboarding, but did do some kiting on frozen Lake George, & assisted Dave N. with a PPG launch..

Did you get to hike back along the tracks with mile long freight trains passing feet from you? That was a real treat.

  • Sun Feb 24, 11:30PM - Peter W
Nice going John and Stephan!! Flying out in SB isn't a given, but I did get to soar a coastal site called Bates today for the entire afternoon. Makes one appreciate the serenity and beauty of Cape Cod as highway 101 was right behind, and beneath me, you had to launch and fly over the Amtrak tracks (and trains!) and there was almost no beach to land on because of the recent storms, so you had to side hill land on the cliffs (legal and allowable). It was fun though. Zig Zaging, however, up Mt.Tom sounds like it was epic. Awesome. Best to all.

  • Mon Feb 11, 12:47PM - Jeff
How about 10? In this cold weather, keep in mind I do stock the Gerbings line of heated gloves and vests and they are a wonderful thing to have. You can order them direct through any Gerbings dealer or myself which ever you prefer. Fly safe and don't forget to wear your shoes and helmets kids!

  • Mon Feb 11, 12:23PM - Chris Grantham
Jeff, I commend you on your eagerness to promote a link between the PG and PPG communities. Why they were divided in the first place I don't know but that's a different topic entirely. I think the first step to improving our collective public image and bringing the two groups together is to promote and demonstrate safe flying practices. You've shot some beautiful footage and I'd love to be able to show it to people who are interested in either PG or PPG. However, there are a few things holding me back. As an instructor I need to show students or potential students the safest and most responsible flying practices. The same for the general public. That means helmets, shoes, etc. It's incredibly tough for instructors to compete with the "reckless" image. We can talk until we're blue in the face but if a landowner jumps online and finds video of pilots being reckless just down the street, there's no way they're going to let us fly on their property. When students are involved, I can enforce helmets and shoes during training but after training the "he's not wearing a helmet so why should I?" mentality takes over and perpetuates the bad public image. Anyway, keep shooting great footage, but try to step it up to a level where it's suitable for the general public. I know the shoes/helmet/reckless attitude issue has even turned away more than a few hot shot PG pilots. Improving the public image through video will help both our communities.

  • Mon Feb 11, 11:54AM - BarryK
Jeez. Enough already! I'm trying really hard not to engage in a pissing contest with you, Jeff. Were there an ignore function on this board, I'd have you on it. Earlier you wrote: "See you in the sky but not here then. " Since promising not to clutter up the flyline, you've posted no fewer than NINE TIMES. I'm trying to stay positive... There's always a challenge and an implicit insult in your messages. I probably shouldn't post this.

  • Mon Feb 11, 11:42AM - Jeff
With the writers permission, I would like to post that article on the USPPA website and the Pennsylvania site as well. When I get the time, I plan on further developing a free flying section with links and expanded information to promote awareness of free flying policy with resources and directions for finding quality training in free flight. If flying clubs around the USA adopt this kind of cooperation and work to create a bridge between our two organizations then it can only strengthen the future of personal foot launched flight as we know it.

  • Mon Feb 11, 11:17AM - Jeff
This kind of valuable information and all the hard work and dedication that went into it needs to be published within the motoring community as well. Paragliding pilots flying by power are often not aware of these things and the exhaustive efforts our free flying counterparts put into these delicate and important projects. The roots of motoring is founded in free flying and motor heads better not forget that. I think I might do a video special on the subject.

  • Mon Feb 11, 10:18AM - Mike H
There is an artilce written by Doug Sharpe about Rutland on the VHGA website (http://www.vhga.org/) In the news section (http://www.vhga.org/news/news.htm). This article will soon be in the USHPA magazine.

More scenes of paragliding down in sunny Christmas, Florida where it is warm unlike up here where it is not!.................http://www.vimeo.com/679937

  • Sun Feb 10, 7:42PM - jarrett
Aloha from Maui! Enough arguing, guys. I agree with Chris that Powered Paragliding instruction is less than adequate, however I belive we can share the skies together. PPG's don't require high elevation to launch, so they need to respect our sites and noise levels which may jepordize these sites. I'd like to see a level of respect and common courtesy and to abide by the rules that govern our shared passion of flying.

  • Sun Feb 10, 6:25PM - Van
Hey Bill look like you are going to have a wonderful time over GV the weather seems XClent after 17 see U at Castelo I hoppe...

  • Sun Feb 10, 6:13PM - Bill
Oh, Yeah, I don't care if it's powered or not. Personally I prefer the challenge of un-powered. I grew up in the flatlands of Ohio so I can understand a need for power. It's like trying to foot-launch in Florida. It's a dang long run!

  • Sun Feb 10, 6:12PM - Jeff
No Eagles for me, I got attacked really bad once and it's no fun so I try to stay away from them. Clouds are nice to look at but I leave em up there where they belong and I don't ever think I've seen a Sandpiper. I hope they don't bite and would prefer to not get attacked by one of those either. Chasing lighthouses sounds a little less dangerous to me.
